Mami Shikimori - Pianist
Mami Shikimori was born in Japan and received her early piano tuition there. In 1993 she moved to England after winning a scholarship to the Purcell School of Music in London where she studied the piano with Jean Anderson and later, going on to the Royal College of Music to study with Bernard Roberts. She also studied accompaniment with John Blakely. In 1999, she was awarded a full scholarship to attend Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California, to study with John Perry.
Mami graduated from the Royal College of Music with the highest honours, receiving the Hopkinson Gold Medal and also winning the Majorie & Arnold Ziff Prize for Outstanding Diploma Recital for which she was awarded the maximum mark, gaining the highest distinction of all students graduating from the RCM in 1999. Her other prizes at the College include the Peter Wallfisch Prize, the Kendall Taylor Prize, the Ellen Marie Curtis Prize, the Millicent Silver Prize, and the Vivian Hamilton Prize. In addition, she won the Emanuel Trophy and the Principles special award.
Mami Shikimori has performed extensively in the UK, Japan, USA and Thailand as a soloist, ensemble player and accompanist. She has appeared with the Thames Chamber Orchestra and Watford Orchestra and performed in a masterclass given by Stephen Kovacevich at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Her recent engagements have included a solo recital at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and a tour of Northeast England. She has broadcast on KUSC in the United States.
